The GNU Project is a huge group of people working together. They want to make free software for everyone to use. Free software gives users many important rights. You can run the programs for any reason you like. You can also study how the programs work. People are allowed to change the code to fix things. You can even share your new versions with others.

This helps people have control over their own computers. It makes using technology a much more open experience.

To make this happen, the project builds many tools. They started by making an editor called Emacs. They also built a tool called GCC, which is a C compiler. A compiler is a program that turns code into something a computer understands. The group also made many smaller tools like grep and awk. These tools help a computer perform many different tasks.

They wanted to build a whole operating system. An operating system is the main software that runs a computer. The project even created a special license to protect these rights.

Richard Stallman started this project in September 1983. He worked at the MIT AI Lab at that time. He became frustrated with a new printer he had to use. The printer used proprietary firmware, which means the code was locked away. Stallman could not see the code to fix his problems. This made him realize that software freedom was a social issue. He announced his plan to start the GNU Project in a Usenet message.

He wanted to build a system that was like Unix. He called the project GNU, which is a recursive acronym. This means it stands for "GNU's not Unix!"

In 1991, a man named Linus Torvalds created the Linux kernel. A kernel is the very core part of an operating system. In December 1992, he released it under the GNU General Public License. This license is a set of rules for free software. When you combine GNU tools with the Linux kernel, you get a full system. The GNU Project calls this combination GNU/Linux.

Many people just call it Linux today. This combination allowed for the first truly free operating system to work well.

Today, the GNU Project does much more than just write code. They work on political campaigns and building awareness. They also help people learn about digital freedom. Some people use special versions of the system called distributions. These distributions follow strict rules to stay completely free. Examples include the Guix System and Trisquel.

The project uses donations and memberships to keep going. This work helps ensure that software stays open for future generations. It connects the work of many programmers around the whole world.
