It works to protect the freedom of computer users. This group believes that software should be free for everyone to use and study. They want people to have control over their own technology. This idea is called the free software movement. The FSF helps make sure this movement stays strong around the world.

To do this, the FSF uses special legal rules called licenses. One famous rule is the GNU General Public License, or GPL. This license uses a concept called copyleft. Copyleft is a way to ensure software stays free for everyone. If someone changes the software, they must share those changes too. This keeps the code open for the whole community. The FSF also manages other licenses like the LGPL and the AGPL.

Richard Stallman started the FSF on October 4, 1985. He is also the founder of the GNU Project. The organization is based in Boston, Massachusetts. In the early years, the FSF used its money to pay developers. These developers wrote free software for the GNU Project. Later, the group focused more on legal and structural work. They also worked to help the growing free software community.

History shows that the FSF has had to defend these rules many times. Between 2002 and 2004, they dealt with big cases involving companies like Linksys. In 2003, a company named SCO sued IBM regarding software rights. The FSF was not part of that lawsuit, but they had to help people understand it. In 2008, the FSF sued Cisco for not following the GPL rules.

Eventually, Cisco and the FSF reached a settlement in 2009. This included a donation to the foundation.

Today, the FSF does many helpful things for technology users. They host software projects on a website called Savannah. They also run a program called Respects Your Freedom, or RYF. This program checks if computer hardware is truly compatible with free software. They also maintain a list of approved operating systems like PureOS and Trisquel.
