Open-source software is a special way to make computer programs. Most software is kept secret by a single company. But open-source software is released under a license that lets anyone use it. The creators grant rights to study, change, and share the source code. Source code is the set of instructions that tells a program how to work.

Because the code is public, people can trust it more. Anyone can see exactly how the program functions. This openness allows many different people to work together on one project.

This way of working is often called the bazaar model. In a traditional model, people work like they are building a cathedral. They work in small, private groups with very clear roles. In the bazaar model, the process is much more social. Users act like co-developers instead of just customers. They find mistakes, which are called bugs, and suggest new ideas.

A rule called Linus's law says that many eyes make bugs shallow. This means that if enough people look at the code, they will find the errors.

People have been defining these rules for a long time. Bruce Perens helped adapt the Debian Free Software Guidelines. These ideas helped form the Open Source Definition used by the Open Source Initiative. In 1997, Eric S. Raymond wrote an essay about the bazaar model. He compared the old way of building software to a cathedral. He argued that the bazaar style helps software grow faster.

There are also different views on the name. Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation prefers the term "free software." He thinks "open source" is a different category of software.

Open-source work is very important for the world today. In 2024, it was estimated to be worth $8.8 trillion to firms. Without it, companies might have to spend 3.5 times as much money. In France, special policies helped create many new jobs. This led to an 18% increase in tech startups.

It also helped increase the number of IT workers by 14%. Open-source projects can be very reliable because thousands of people test them. Even if the original creator stops working, the code stays alive.

Many tools help people collaborate on these projects. Programmers use version control systems to manage their changes. Some systems are centralized, while others are distributed. Git is a very popular distributed system used today.

People often host their code on sites like GitHub or GitLab. They use bug trackers like Bugzilla to organize their work. You can help even if you do not know how to code. You can help with design, testing, or even writing instructions. This teamwork makes the digital world better for everyone.
