He is a leader in the free software movement. This movement believes that people should have the freedom to use, study, and change computer software. Stallman thinks that software should be shared so everyone can help make it better. He wants users to have control over their own digital tools. This idea is about more than just technology; it is about a moral belief in freedom.

To make this freedom a reality, Stallman created a special way of working called copyleft. This uses copyright law to protect the rights of users instead of stopping them. Instead of using laws to keep code secret, copyleft uses them to ensure the code stays free for everyone to share.

He also wrote the GNU General Public License, which is a set of rules for software. This license is the most widely used one in the world. It helps people know exactly how they can legally study and distribute free software.

Stallman's journey with computers began very early in his life. He was born on March 16, 1953, in New York City. As a young boy at summer camp, he even read manuals for the IBM 7094 computer. He later attended Harvard University, where he earned a degree in physics in 1974. After Harvard, he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to study physics. However, he eventually left his doctorate program to focus on his work as a programmer at the MIT AI Laboratory.

In September 1983, Stallman launched the GNU Project. The goal was to create a complete computer operating system made entirely of free software. The name GNU is a recursive acronym, which means it stands for "GNU's Not Unix." In October 1985, he founded the Free Software Foundation (FSF) to support this work. He also built many important tools, such as the GNU C Compiler (GCC) and the GNU Emacs text editor. In 1989, he helped start the League for Programming Freedom to continue his advocacy.

Many people use the results of his work every single day. For example, the GNU tools were used to help create the Linux kernel in 1991. Because of this, many people call the whole system GNU/Linux. This connects his big ideas to the computers and phones we use now. Even though there are many debates about how software should be owned, Stallman's ideas changed how the world thinks about digital rights. He continues to be a major figure in the history of computing.
