Emacs is a special family of text editors used to write and manage digital text.

It is most famous for being extensible. This means people can add new parts to it to make it do more things. Most versions use a coding language called Lisp to help users do this. Because of Lisp, users can write their own commands or even small apps.

This makes Emacs much more than just a simple typing tool. It is a tool that grows with the person using it.

How does Emacs work so well? It uses a system of macros, which are sets of commands that work together.

A user can combine many small commands into one single macro to finish a hard job quickly. Many versions also use a special way to handle files. Instead of reading one page at a time, they read the whole file into a single buffer. This allows the editor to jump around the text easily. This method is how almost all modern text editors work today. It makes editing feel smooth and fast.

The history of Emacs began in the mid-1970s at the MIT AI Lab.

David A. Moon and Guy L. Steele Jr. created the first version. It was originally a set of macros for an older editor called TECO. Richard Stallman later took over its maintenance and improved it greatly. He also created GNU Emacs for the GNU Project in 1984. This version was meant to be a free alternative to other editors. It became the first program released by the new GNU Project.

There are many important facts about the different versions of Emacs.

GNU Emacs released its first public version on March 20, 1985. It has over 10,000 built-in commands for users to explore. Another version called XEmacs branched off from GNU Emacs in 1991. While XEmacs is still around, its development is now very slow. GNU Emacs is much more popular and is still being updated today. As of 2025, over 1,600 different people have helped write code for it.

You can think of Emacs like a set of building blocks.

A standard text editor is like a single toy that only does one thing. Emacs is like a box of blocks that you can use to build anything. You can use it to write an email or manage files. You can even use it to play games like Tetris or Snake.
