Lisp (programming language)

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Lisp is a special family of computer languages. It has a very long history in the world of science. It is the second-oldest high-level language still in use today. Only Fortran is older than Lisp. The name Lisp stands for "List Processor." This name describes how the language works with groups of items.

Lisp is very important because it helped start many ideas in computer science. It was used to build early tools for artificial intelligence research.

Lisp works by using lists to organize information. Everything in the language is written as an s-expression. These are just lists that use many parentheses to group things.

When a programmer wants to use a function, they write the name first. Then they put the pieces of information, called arguments, inside the same list. Because the code is made of lists, the computer can treat code just like data. This allows programmers to create new ways to write instructions. This special way of working is called a macro system.

John McCarthy began creating Lisp in 1958. He was working at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, also known as MIT. He wanted a language that could help with artificial intelligence research. He specifically wanted it to work on an IBM 704 computer.

A man named Steve Russell helped by making the first real version. He used punched cards to run the code on that IBM machine. McCarthy later published his big design ideas in a paper in 1960.

Many different versions of Lisp have been made over the years. These different versions are called dialects. Some famous ones include Scheme and Common Lisp.

In 1994, a group called ANSI published a standard for Common Lisp. This helped different versions work in a similar way. There is also a newer version called Clojure. It is designed to run on the Java virtual machine. Even though there are many types, they all share the same roots.

Lisp is connected to many things you might already know about technology. It was used to help build the SHRDLU artificial intelligence system. It even helped make the Jak and Daxter video games.

The language helped invent "garbage collection." This is a way for a computer to clean up its own memory. Lisp also helped create the idea of recursion. This is when a process repeats itself to solve a problem. Even after sixty years, Lisp is still a vital part of how we study computers.
