Stallman felt this was important after a problem with a printer. He could not change the printer's code to fix it. To help, he made the GNU General Public License. This is a set of rules. These rules make sure the software stays free for everyone. The project works to build an operating system. An operating system is the main part that runs a computer. The team made many tools, like a text editor called Emacs. In 1991, a man named Linus Torvalds made the Linux kernel. A kernel is the core part of an operating system. In 1992, Linux was released under the GNU license. When people put GNU tools and the Linux kernel together, they get GNU/Linux. Many people call this just Linux. The GNU Project still works today. They make new software and teach people about digital freedom.
