Flash memory helps us save digital data.

It is in phones, cameras, and video games. It is special because it keeps data even when the power is off.

Fujio Masuoka invented flash memory at Toshiba in 1980. A colleague suggested the name "flash." This is because erasing data looks like a camera flash.

There are two main kinds of flash memory. The first is NOR flash. It lets a computer read small bits of data very quickly. This makes it good for running code. The second is NAND flash. It can store a huge amount of data in a small space. It is much cheaper to make. Most USB drives and memory cards use NAND flash.

Flash memory uses tiny parts called cells to hold data. Some new kinds, called 3D NAND, stack these cells on top of each other. This lets them hold even more information.

However, flash memory can wear out. It can only be erased and rewritten a certain number of times.
