It uses flash memory to store information. Fujio Masuoka invented flash memory at Toshiba in 1980. This type of memory lets devices keep data without a battery.

In the 1980s, people needed new ways to save data. They wanted something lighter than floppy disks for laptops. Many different kinds of cards were made back then. Some were for games, and some helped laptops hold more data. Some early cards used a special part called SRAM. These cards were fast, but they needed a lithium battery. Without the battery, they could not keep the data.

Over time, cards became much smaller. This is called miniaturization. People wanted tiny cards for cell phones and cameras. In 2000, the SD card was announced. It was made to work with many devices. Today, SD cards are the most common type. Other types like CompactFlash and Memory Stick are also used. Even video game consoles use cards to save games.
