A CompactFlash card is a tool for storing data.

SanDisk first made these cards in 1994. They became very popular for early portable devices. They helped cameras store many photos.

Some cards are thin. Others are thicker to fit special tools.

These cards use flash memory. This means they have no moving parts. This makes them strong against bumps. Most cards use a type of memory called NAND. This memory can be written to many times. But it can also wear out. To help, cards use wear leveling. This is a way to spread out the work. It moves data so all parts wear evenly.

Some cards can even act like a hard drive.

You can use an adapter to plug them into a computer. This lets the card work like a main storage disk. Today, new types of cards are taking over. High-end cameras now use CFexpress cards. These are much faster for big video files. But CompactFlash is still a very famous way to save data.
