A CompactFlash card is a tool used to store digital information. It is a type of mass storage device for portable electronics.

SanDisk first manufactured these cards in 1994. They became a very successful format for early memory cards. They even beat other early types like SmartMedia and Miniature Card. Today, they are still known for being a strong choice for professional cameras. Many people used them to keep their photos and videos safe for a long time.

These cards work using a special kind of technology called flash memory. This means the card has no moving parts inside it.

When you want to read data, the card's controller wakes up the memory chips. It usually reads the data in parallel to keep things moving. When you write data, the card must first erase a block of space. This part takes much longer than reading. The card also uses something called wear leveling. This is a way to spread out the work so all parts of the memory wear down evenly.

History shows how much these cards have grown over the years. The very first cards could only hold 2 to 10 megabytes of data. By 1996, they could hold 64 MB. In 1998, they reached 128 MB. By the year 2002, they could hold 1 GB.

Later, companies like Samsung and SanDisk made much larger cards. In 2006, SanDisk announced a 16 GB card. By 2008, other makers were even making 100 GB cards. This growth helped cameras take much better pictures.

There are different sizes and speeds for these cards. There is a thin Type I version that is 3.3 mm thick. There is also a thicker Type II version that is 5 mm thick.

The thicker Type II slots can even hold tiny hard drives. Some cards are very fast and use special modes to move data. In 2003, a new version added UDMA to help with speed. In 2008, a new version called CFast was announced. CFast is faster because it uses a different path for data called Serial ATA.

Even though they are older, these cards link to many things we use today. You can use an adapter to plug a card into a computer.

This can make the card act like a main hard drive. Some people even use them in special computer setups called RAID. However, newer technology is starting to take their place. High-end cameras like the Nikon Z9 now use CFexpress cards. These new cards are much faster for recording huge 8K videos. While they are changing, CompactFlash helped start the way we store digital memories.
