Memory card

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A memory card is a small electronic device used to store digital information. Most of these cards use a technology called flash memory to keep your data safe.

This is very helpful for portable gadgets like digital cameras. Instead of using a large USB drive that sticks out, you can slide a tiny card into a small socket. This makes the whole device much easier to carry around. Today, many different types of cards exist, but the SD card is the most common one.

How these cards work has changed a lot over time. Some very early cards used a type of memory called SRAM. These cards were quite fast, but they had a big problem. They needed a lithium battery inside just to keep the data from disappearing. In 1992, a company named SanDisk introduced the FlashDisk. This was one of the first cards to use flash memory. Because of this, it did not need a battery to hold onto its contents. This change made memory cards much more reliable for everyone to use.

The history of these cards began with a need for better tools. In the 1980s, people wanted something lighter than floppy disk drives for their laptops. They also wanted something that used less power and took up less space. Fujio Masuoka invented flash memory at Toshiba in 1980. Toshiba then began selling it commercially in 1987. During this time, many different companies made their own versions of cards. Some were called Bee Cards, Sega Cards, or Mitsubishi Melcards. These early formats often could not work with each other.

Many important dates and numbers shaped the world of memory cards. In 1985, an association called JEIDA started working on a standard design. Later, in 1989, the PCMCIA group was created to help cards work in PCs. The first PC Card specifications were released in 1990. In the early 2000s, memory cards were quite expensive to buy. In 2001, they cost about US$3 per megabyte of storage. By 2005, SD cards and MMC cards began to take over the market. This helped end the long "format war" between different companies.

You can see the influence of memory cards in many things you use. Many older video game consoles used them to save your progress. For example, the Neo Geo released a console in 1990 that used memory cards. Today, even though many devices use big hard drives, portable gaming systems still love small cards. They are great because they use very little power and are not mechanically complex. Whether it is a tiny microSD in a phone or a large card in a camera, these little tools keep our digital lives organized.
