In 1989, the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, or PCMCIA, was formed. They worked with JEIDA to adopt a 68-pin connector design. The PC Card specification was released in 1990 and unified these standards. 
As technology progressed, the industry saw a massive push toward miniaturization. In 1994, formats smaller than the PC Card arrived, such as CompactFlash and SmartMedia. The desire for smaller storage for cell phones and digital cameras drove this trend. In 2001, SmartMedia held 50% of the digital camera market, while CompactFlash held the professional market. However, by 2005, SD cards and MMC cards began to dominate the SmartMedia space. This led to a "format war" between different types like Sony's Memory Stick and CompactFlash. By 2010, the format war effectively ended in favor of the SD card. 
Memory cards have also played a huge role in the history of video games. The Neo Geo AES, released in 1990, was the first console to use memory cards. These cards were also compatible with Neo Geo MVS arcade cabinets. This allowed players to move saved data between home systems and arcade machines. While many modern consoles now use hard disk drives or cloud storage, portable systems still use memory cards. They are preferred because they have low power consumption and reduced mechanical complexity.
Today, we can see the incredible range of memory card sizes and speeds. We have moved from early PC Cards that cost US$100 per megabyte to modern high-speed options. For example, the CFexpress Type C can reach speeds of up to 3938 MB/s. Some modern standards like UFS can even reach speeds of 6000 MB/s. The evolution from large, expensive cards to tiny, lightning-fast microSD cards shows how much digital storage has changed.
