A small printed circuit board carries all the essential parts. The USB connector provides the physical link to a host computer. A USB mass storage controller acts as a small microcontroller. This controller contains its own ROM and RAM to manage data. It also handles the communication between the USB interface and the memory. Early USB 1.1 connections were limited to a transfer rate of about 1.5 MB/s. Second-generation drives using USB 2.0 were much faster. They could reach read speeds of up to 30 MB/s. USB 2.0 itself has a theoretical upper bound of 480 Mbit/s. Later, USB 3.1 type-C drives were announced in 2015. These newer drives can achieve read and write speeds around 530 MB/s. These advancements allow users to move large files almost instantly.

While very durable, flash drives do have some technical limitations. Because they have no moving parts, they resist physical damage better than hard drives. They are also less affected by electromagnetic interference than floppy disks. However, they can still suffer from data loss due to bit leaking. This happens if the device lacks electrical power for a very long time. Spontaneous controller failure can also occur due to poor manufacturing. To help prevent errors, drives use internal data redundancy and error correction algorithms. These systems help ensure that the stored information remains accurate over time.
