As technology improved, the 5¼-inch format became common, offering capacities like 360 KB using MFM encoding. By the late 1980s, the 3½-inch disk began to replace the 5¼-inch version. IBM introduced high-density 1.44 MB disks in 1987 for the Personal System/2 line. Some specialized versions, such as the 2.88 MB Double-Sided Extended-Density disks, were also developed. Each new generation generally offered more storage and better physical protection than the one before it.

Capacity was often increased through different recording techniques and hardware. For example, high-capacity disks used servomechanisms to increase the number of tracks on the disk.

This allowed more data to be packed into the same physical area. Some drives could handle different densities by changing how the disk rotated. High-density drives had a smaller head gap than standard double-density drives. This allowed them to read more precise tracks. However, using a high-density drive to write to a low-density disk could create compatibility issues. If a disk was updated on an 80-track drive, it might become unreadable on a 40-track drive.

Compatibility between different computer systems was often a significant challenge. Different sizes of disks are mechanically incompatible, meaning a disk only fits its specific drive size.

Even within the same size, software and encoding differences caused problems. For instance, 5¼-inch disks formatted for Apple II computers would not work on a Commodore. Apple's later 1.44 MB SuperDrives could read IBM PC-compatible disks, but the reverse was rarely true. This was due to the disk controller and its use of Group Coded Recording (GCR) encoding. These technical barriers meant that users had to be careful about which disks they used with which machines.

Today, floppy disks have been superseded by much faster and larger storage methods. Technologies like USB flash drives, memory cards, and optical discs offer much higher capacities.

We also rely on cloud storage and local computer networks for data. Despite this, the floppy disk remains a powerful cultural symbol.
