A floppy disk is a special way to store digital data.

It is made of a thin, flexible disk with a magnetic coating. This coating allows the disk to hold information. The disk stays inside a square plastic shell. Inside the shell, there is often fabric to help remove dust. This keeps the spinning disk very clean. You use a floppy disk drive to read or write data.

The disk must be placed into a drive connected to a computer.

How these disks work involves a few important steps. First, the disk is placed into the drive. The drive's motor spins the disk around. Then, a part called a read-write head touches the magnetic surface. This head can change the magnetism to save new data. It can also sense the magnetism to read old data.

Different sizes of disks are mechanically incompatible. This means a disk only fits into its specific size of drive. You cannot put a large disk into a small drive.

History shows that floppy disks have changed a lot over time. IBM invented the first floppy disks in 1971. These original disks were 8 inches wide. They were used to load microcode into systems.

Later, companies like Memorex began selling disks and drives separately in 1972. Shugart Associates introduced the 5¼-inch drive in 1976. By the late 1980s, the 3½-inch disk became more popular than the 5¼-inch version. This smaller disk was better because it had a rigid case. The hard case protected the magnetic disk from dirt and damage.

There are many different sizes and capacities to know. The 8-inch disks were the first standard. The 5¼-inch disks were common in many early computers.

The 3½-inch disk became the most dominant format. Some of these disks could hold 360 KB of data. Other high-density versions could hold 1.44 MB.

Even though they are small, 1.44 MB is a lot of data for an old disk. Some special disks even reached a capacity of 2.88 MB. These different sizes represent different generations of technology.

Floppy disks were very common in the late 20th century. Today, we use much faster ways to store data. We use USB flash drives and memory cards now. We also use cloud storage and local computer networks.

Even though we do not use them much, they are still famous. Many computer programs still use a floppy disk icon for the "save" button. This is a type of design called skeuomorphism. It uses an old object to help people understand a new digital task.
