These cards are often marked with Roman numerals next to the SD logo to indicate their specific version. For example, UHS-I, UHS-II, and UHS-III represent different levels of performance. These speeds are vital for handling data-intensive tasks like high-resolution video recording or burst photography. Some very advanced cards even use the SD Express standard to reach even higher speeds.
The history of these cards began with a need for standardization. In the 1990s, the memory market was fragmented by many different proprietary formats. Companies like Sony and Olympus had their own specific cards, which made it difficult for consumers. To solve this, SanDisk partnered with Siemens and Nokia in 1996 to create the MultiMediaCard (MMC). In August 1999, SanDisk, Panasonic, and Kioxia developed the Secure Digital (SD) format as a successor to MMC. They wanted a high-performance standard that offered better interoperability across different brands.
To manage this new standard, the founders established SD-3C, LLC, to handle licensing and intellectual property. In January 2000, they formed the SD Association (SDA) as a non-profit organization. The SDA is responsible for developing technical specifications and promoting the format. While it started with only 30 member companies at the 2000 Consumer Electronics Show, it has grown significantly. As of 2023, the SDA includes approximately 1,000 member companies. This large group ensures that cards remain compatible with a vast range of electronic devices.
There are four distinct capacity standards for SD cards, each using different file systems. The first is Standard Capacity (SDSC), which supports up to 2,000 megabytes and uses FAT12 or FAT16. The second is High Capacity (SDHC), introduced in 2006, which supports up to 32 gigabytes using the FAT32 file system.
The evolution of SD cards shows a massive increase in storage density. A tiny microSD card can hold 8 billion bytes of data. This is a staggering comparison to the magnetic-core memory used in the 1970s. In those older systems, holding just eight bytes of data required 64 large magnetic cores. Today, the same tiny card holds billions of times more information. This progress in flash memory manufacturing continues to drive the development of even larger and faster storage solutions for the future.
