This was the MultiMediaCard, or MMC. It was small like a postage stamp. It was simpler than older cards. These older cards had many pins. The MMC used only seven flat contacts. This made it easy to use in small tools.

Many different types of MMC cards were made later. Some were very small. We call these MMCmicro cards.

The MMC helped lead to the SD card. The SD card became much more popular. But the MMC lives on in a new way. It is now used as eMMC. This stands for embedded MultiMediaCard.

Unlike regular cards, you cannot take eMMC out. It is soldered onto a device's circuit board.

This means it stays inside the device forever. It is used in many cheap tablets and phones. It is a good choice because it is small. It also costs less money. This helps keep the price of tools low for everyone.
