It grows in Northeast India. Many people call it the king chili. Some call it the king cobra chili. The name "ghost pepper" comes from a mistake. A word that sounds like "ghost" was mixed up with a word for "Bhutanese."

This pepper is famous for its heat. It has a high Scoville rating. This is a way to measure how spicy a pepper is. The ghost pepper can have a rating over one million. This is much hotter than Tabasco sauce. The heat comes from capsaicin. This is a chemical that makes peppers feel hot. Most peppers only have this in the parts near the seeds. Ghost peppers have it throughout the whole fruit.

Ghost peppers come in many colors. Red is the most common color. You can also find orange, yellow, or chocolate ones. The peppers have very thin skin. They can look smooth or bumpy. Some plants are tall with thin branches. Other plants are short and strong. People use these peppers in curries and pickles. They also use them to keep wild elephants away from fences.
