In this part of Mexico, people use them in many meals. They might eat them fresh or in a salsa.

Habaneros come in many colors. They start out green when they are young. As they grow, they turn orange or red. Some types are white, yellow, or purple. There is even a dark brown kind called the chocolate habanero.

The black habanero is a small, round, dark brown fruit. It is much hotter than a regular habanero.

Eating a habanero is a big event! The heat does not start right away. It sets in after a few minutes. The heat can stay in your mouth for an hour. In 1999, it was the hottest pepper in the world. Now, other peppers have taken that title. Some people even make a mild version. This version has the same smell but no heat.
