Most peppers have a hot taste. This heat comes from a chemical called capsaicin. Bell peppers are special because they do not have it. This makes them sweet instead of spicy. This is why people call them sweet peppers.

Bell peppers are native to Mexico and Central America. They also grow in the Caribbean. People brought them to Europe a long time ago. In some places, they have many names. In Australia, people call them capsicum. In Japan, they use the name papurika. In Russia, they are called Bulgarian peppers.

These peppers are very healthy. A red pepper has a lot of vitamin C. It also has much more vitamin A than a green one. You can eat them in salads or on pizza. Some people even stuff them with food. In 2020, the world grew 36 million tonnes of them. China grew the most.
