His work was a key part of the Industrial Revolution. This was a time of big changes in technology. He also helped set the standard for how tracks are built. The width between rails is called a gauge. Most railways in the world still use his version today.

Stephenson learned how to make machines work through trial and error. He became an expert with steam-driven machinery. One big problem was keeping miners safe from gas explosions. He designed a safety lamp to help.

This lamp had tiny holes for air to enter. The flames could not pass through these small holes. This kept the lamp from causing a fire in the mine. He also worked on how to make heavy engines run on tracks. He used many wheels to spread the weight of the locomotive. This helped stop the heavy engines from breaking the rails.

His parents, Robert and Mabel, could not read or write. Because his father earned a low wage, George could not go to school as a child. He worked very hard to learn on his own. He paid for night school to learn reading, writing, and math. He did not learn to read until he was 18. Later, he worked as an enginewright. This meant he fixed and looked after large steam engines.

Stephenson built many important machines and railways. In 1814, he designed a locomotive named Blücher. This engine could pull 30 tons of coal up a hill. In 1825, his company built Locomotion No. 1. This was the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line.

It ran on the Stockton and Darlington Railway. In 1830, he opened the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. This was the first inter-city railway in the world to use locomotives.

He also built the Hetton colliery railway in 1822. This was the first railway that used no animal power.

His life shows how much hard work can change things. He started with very little money and no early schooling. He grew into a man who solved huge problems for his country.

His son, Robert, helped him run their locomotive company. Robert even learned to speak with a different accent to help in meetings. George's ideas about tracks and engines still shape our world. We see his impact every time we see a train on a track.
