Richard Trevithick was a famous inventor and mining engineer from Cornwall.

He was born in 1771 in a place known for mining. His father was a mining captain, so Richard grew up around machines.

As a young boy, he watched steam engines pump water out of deep mines. He was a very tall and athletic person. He was even a champion Cornish wrestler. This strength and interest in machines helped him become a leader in engineering.

Most steam engines in the 1700s used low pressure to work. These engines were often very large and heavy. Trevithick wanted to make something different and more useful. He worked on high-pressure steam, which is steam that has a lot of force.

This strong steam could push a piston all by itself. Because the steam was so strong, the engine did not need a large condenser. This meant the engine could be much smaller and lighter. A smaller engine was light enough to be put on wheels.

In 1801, Trevithick built a steam road vehicle.

He named this machine the Puffing Devil. On Christmas Eve, it carried six passengers up a hill in Camborne. Later, in 1803, he built the London Steam Carriage. He drove it from Holborn to Paddington in London to show people. These early machines were hard to use and could be expensive. They were not as easy to run as a horse-drawn carriage.

One of Trevithick's biggest achievements happened in 1804.

He built a steam locomotive to run on rails. On 21 February 1804, this engine pulled a train at the Penydarren Ironworks. This took place in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. It was the first time a locomotive hauled a railway journey. He also worked as a mining consultant in places like Peru and Costa Rica. His life had many ups and downs, including times when he lost his money.

Working with high pressure could be dangerous. In 1803, an engine at Greenwich exploded and killed four men. Trevithick believed this happened because of how the machine was used. To make engines safer, he added new parts.

He added safety valves to control the pressure. He also added a fusible plug made of lead. If the water level got too low, the lead would melt. This would release steam and make a loud noise to warn the operator. This helped prevent accidents by letting people know the engine was too hot.
