Richard made a new kind of steam engine. Most engines then used low pressure. Richard used high-pressure steam. This means the steam was very strong. High pressure let him make smaller engines. These engines were light enough to move on wheels.
In 1801, he built a steam carriage. He named it the Puffing Devil. It carried six people up a hill. He also made a steam carriage for London. It was called the London Steam Carriage.
Richard helped start the age of trains. In 1804, his locomotive pulled a train on tracks. This was the first time a steam engine hauled a railway journey. He also worked in Peru and Costa Rica. Richard was a very strong man. He was even a champion wrestler.

These machines required a large component called a condenser to work. Trevithick realized that improvements in boiler technology could change this. He focused on developing high-pressure steam engines. This type of steam has much greater force than the steam used in previous designs. By using high-pressure steam, an engine could move a piston on its own. This eliminated the need for a heavy condenser. 
The transition to high-pressure steam changed the physical design of engines. Because the steam was so strong, the engine cylinders could be much smaller. This made the machines lighter and more compact. Trevithick reasoned that a lighter engine could carry its own weight. This was a vital step for mobile transport. He used a double-acting cylinder to power his designs. He also used a four-way valve to distribute the steam. To avoid legal issues with existing patents, he vented exhaust steam through a vertical chimney directly into the atmosphere. He converted linear motion into circular motion using a crank. 
Trevithick applied these ideas to road transport in the early 1800s. In 1801, he built a full-size steam road locomotive named the Puffing Devil.
One of Trevithick's most significant milestones occurred in 1804. He moved from road transport to rail transport by creating a working steam locomotive. 
Working with high-pressure steam carried serious risks. In 1803, a stationary pumping engine at Greenwich exploded and killed four men. Trevithick believed the accident was caused by careless operation rather than a design flaw. However, his competitors, Boulton and Watt, used the event to highlight the dangers of high pressure. Trevithick responded by inventing new safety features. He incorporated two safety valves into his future engines. One was an adjustable valve that used a weighted lever to control pressure. He also added a fusible plug made of lead. If the water level dropped too low, the heat would melt the lead. This released steam into the fire to create an audible alarm.
Trevithick's career was marked by both great success and significant hardship. He was a highly respected figure during the prime of his career. He even worked as a mining consultant in Peru and explored Costa Rica. However, he also faced intense rivalry from other engineers. At one point, he even faced financial ruin. Despite these struggles, his work fundamentally changed how humans move goods and people. His development of high-pressure steam was a key component in the evolution of the industrial world.
