During the late 1700s, steam technology relied on low-pressure systems. Engineers like Thomas Newcomen and James Watt developed engines that used atmospheric pressure or low-pressure steam. These machines required a large component called a condenser to work. Trevithick realized that improvements in boiler technology could change this. He focused on developing high-pressure steam engines. This type of steam has much greater force than the steam used in previous designs. By using high-pressure steam, an engine could move a piston on its own. This eliminated the need for a heavy condenser.

The transition to high-pressure steam changed the physical design of engines. Because the steam was so strong, the engine cylinders could be much smaller. This made the machines lighter and more compact. Trevithick reasoned that a lighter engine could carry its own weight. This was a vital step for mobile transport. He used a double-acting cylinder to power his designs. He also used a four-way valve to distribute the steam. To avoid legal issues with existing patents, he vented exhaust steam through a vertical chimney directly into the atmosphere. He converted linear motion into circular motion using a crank.
