By 1733, about 125 engines were in use. They worked in many mining areas in Britain and Europe. These machines helped people get coal and metal. Later, James Watt made a better engine. His design used less fuel. However, many Newcomen engines stayed in use for a long time.

Newcomen's religious connections also helped his invention spread. For instance, engineers Jonathan Hornblower Sr. and his son were members of his Baptist church. These social links helped the technology reach more people. Newcomen died in 1729 at the home of Edward Wallin. He was buried at Bunhill Fields, though the exact location of his grave is unknown.
The impact of the Newcomen engine was visible across many regions. By 1733, approximately 125 engines were installed throughout Britain and continental Europe. They drained coal mines in the Black Country, Warwickshire, and Newcastle upon Tyne. They also worked in tin and copper mines in Cornwall, as well as lead mines in Flintshire and Derbyshire. By 1775, about 600 engines had been built. While early versions used brass, new iron casting techniques allowed for much larger cylinders. Some of these iron cylinders reached about 6 feet in diameter.
Despite its success, the Newcomen engine was not perfectly efficient. A lot of heat was lost during the condensation process because the cylinder had to be cooled. This was acceptable in coal mines where "slack," or unsaleable small coal, was plentiful. However, it was expensive to run in places like Cornwall where coal was harder to find. Eventually, James Watt introduced an improved design. Watt used a separate condenser to keep the main cylinder hot. This made the Watt steam engine much more fuel efficient. 
Even with Watt's improvements, the Newcomen engine remained popular for many years. It was cheaper and less complicated than the newer models. Of the 2,200 engines built during the 18th century, only about 450 were Watt engines. Many people even added "pickle-pot" condensers to existing Newcomen engines to make them better. Today, we can still see examples of his work.
