While a popular myth suggests this was the first steam-powered vehicle, the ship was actually hand-powered. However, he did cast the world's first steam cylinder at an iron foundry in Veckerhagen.
New technology often causes fear in established industries. An apocryphal story claims that boatmen in Munden destroyed Papin's ship in 1707. They reportedly feared the new vessel would threaten their own livelihoods. This story has been depicted in various pieces of eighteenth-century art. In 2016, researchers finally solved the mystery of his passing. They discovered a record in an 18th-century register from St Bride's Church in London. The document stated that Denys Papin was buried on 26 August 1713. This date was just a few days after his 66th birthday. He was laid to rest in the Lower Ground of the church. Today, a memorial plaque stands at the West Entrance of St Bride's to honor his achievements. His legacy is also found in modern geography, with streets and statues named after him in Montreal, Blois, and Carcassonne.
