He was a physicist and a mathematician. This means he studied how things work and used math to solve problems.

Papin made many useful things. He invented a steam digester. This was a tool like a pressure cooker. It used steam to cook food. He also made a model for a piston steam engine. A piston is a part that moves up and down inside a tube. This engine used steam to create power. Later, he made a second engine with a friend. This one used steam pressure to work.

Papin also worked on boats. He built a ship with paddles to move. He used hand-cranks to turn the paddles.

Some people thought his ship used steam, but it used hand power. He lived a hard life and died with very little money. For a long time, no one knew where he was buried. In 2016, people found a record. It showed he was buried in London in 1713. Now, a plaque honors his great work.
