Denis Papin was a brilliant inventor and scientist from France. He was a physicist and a mathematician who loved to discover how things work.

He is most famous for creating many important machines. He invented the steam digester, which was a very early version of a pressure cooker. This invention helped lead to the steam engine we use today. He also worked on a submersible boat and a centrifugal pump. His many ideas changed how people thought about using power.

Papin learned how to use steam and air to move things. He became very interested in using a vacuum to create motive power. In 1690, he built a model of a piston steam engine. A piston is a part that moves up and down inside a tube. This engine used atmospheric pressure to work. Later, in 1705, he worked with Gottfried Leibniz on a second engine. This newer engine used steam pressure instead of air pressure.

Papin's life was full of big changes and travels. He was born in Chitenay, France, in 1647. He studied at the University of Angers and earned a medical degree in 1669. Because of his religious beliefs as a Huguenot, he had to leave France. He moved to London in 1675 to work with Robert Boyle. Later, he lived in Venice and worked at the accademia publica di scienze. Between 1687 and 1707, he taught math at the University of Marburg in Germany.

Many interesting stories follow Papin's many inventions. In 1705, he built a ship with hand-cranked paddles to travel with his family. Some people later told a story that this was actually a steam-powered ship. This story was later proven to be a myth. Another story says boatmen in Munden destroyed his ship because they were afraid of new technology. In a foundry at Veckerhagen, he even cast the world's first steam cylinder. These events show how much his work surprised the people of his time.

Even though he was a great inventor, Papin had a very difficult end to his life. He died a pauper, which means he had almost no money left. For 303 years, no one knew exactly when or where he was buried.

In 2016, researchers found an old record from St Bride's Church in London. This record showed he was buried on 26 August 1713. Today, a special plaque at the church honors his amazing life. His name lives on in streets and statues in places like Montreal and Blois.
