Stephenson’s journey began with significant challenges in his early life. He was born on 9 June 1781 in Wylam, Northumberland. His parents, Robert and Mabel, could not read or write. Because his father earned a very low wage as a fireman, George could not attend school. He remained illiterate until he was 18 years old. He eventually paid for night school to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic. 
One of his first major technical achievements involved mine safety. In 1815, Stephenson began experimenting with a safety lamp to prevent mine explosions. These explosions were often caused by naked flames hitting gases in the mines. He used trial and error to create a design with a perforated plate. This plate contained a glass cylinder and tiny holes for air. These holes were small enough that the flames could not pass through them. 
Stephenson also made vital advancements in locomotive technology. In 1814, he designed his first locomotive, named Blücher. This engine was a successful flanged-wheel adhesion locomotive. This means its traction relied on the contact between its flanged wheels and the rail. 

His work led to the creation of the first major public railways. In 1821, he surveyed the Stockton and Darlington Railway. He worked with his 18-year-old son, Robert, to begin construction. In 1825, their company, Robert Stephenson and Company, completed Locomotion No. 1. This was the first steam locomotive to carry passengers on a public rail line. 

Stephenson's influence extended to the very structure of the tracks themselves. He worked with William Losh to improve the design of cast-iron edge rails. This helped reduce the brittleness that caused rails to break under heavy engines. 
Throughout his career, Stephenson acted as a chief guide for new transportation methods. He served as a consultant on many railroad projects both in England and abroad. He solved difficult problems involving roadway construction and bridge design.
