Brunel's technical foundation began with his father, Marc Isambard Brunel. His father was a French civil engineer who taught him drawing and observation at age four. By age eight, Isambard had learned Euclidean geometry. He became fluent in French and studied at colleges in Caen and Paris. After his studies, he apprenticed under the master clockmaker Abraham-Louis Breguet. This rigorous training in mathematics and mechanics prepared him for complex engineering challenges. 
One of his earliest major roles was assisting his father on the Thames Tunnel project. This involved creating a tunnel under the River Thames between Rotherhithe and Wapping. The work was dangerous because the riverbed consisted of waterlogged sediment and loose gravel. To prevent cave-ins, they used an ingenious tunneling shield designed by Marc Brunel. However, the project faced severe setbacks due to flooding. In 1828, a flood killed two senior miners and seriously injured the younger Brunel. He spent six months recuperating, during which he began designing the Clifton Suspension Bridge. 
Brunel's work on the Great Western Railway (GWR) revolutionized public transport. He prioritized high standards by using careful surveys to minimize gradients and curves. This approach required expensive techniques, such as building new viaducts and the massive Box Tunnel. One notable and controversial decision was his use of the "broad gauge." This was a wider track measurement than the standard gauge used elsewhere. 
In the field of naval engineering, Brunel designed three revolutionary steamships. These included the Great Western in 1838 and the Great Eastern in 1859. The Great Eastern, launched in 1843, was the first propeller-driven, ocean-going iron ship. At the time of its launch, it was the largest ship ever built. These vessels were part of his ambitious plan to connect Britain to the Americas via the sea. His maritime designs pushed the boundaries of what ships could achieve in terms of size and power.
Brunel is also famous for his many bridges and viaducts. He designed the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, which spans over 700 feet. Although construction was delayed by the Queen Square riots, it was eventually completed in 1864. He also built the Maidenhead Railway Bridge, which is the flattest and widest brick arch bridge in the world. This bridge still carries main line trains today, even though modern trains are ten times heavier than those in his era. 
To save money on certain railway projects, Brunel used timber viaducts. For the Cornwall Railway, he built 42 wooden viaducts supported by timber bracing on masonry piers. While this reduced initial construction costs, it made maintenance more expensive. The last of these timber structures was dismantled in 1934 and replaced with masonry. This shows how Brunel balanced immediate economic needs with long-term engineering durability.
Brunel's impact on society was recognized long after his death in 1859. In 2002, he was ranked second in a BBC public poll of the "100 Greatest Britons." His work remains integrated into modern life; for example, the Thames Tunnel is now part of the London Overground. His ability to combine mathematical precision with bold, large-scale vision helped transition the world into the modern industrial age.
