He lived during the 1800s. This was a time called the Industrial Revolution. During this time, many new machines and ways of traveling were invented. Brunel was a giant of this era. He changed how people moved across the land and sea. His clever designs helped build the modern world we live in today.

Brunel worked on many different things. He helped his father build a tunnel under the River Thames. This was a very hard job because workers dug under the riverbed. They used a special shield to stop the ground from falling in.

Sadly, floods happened during the work. These floods hurt Brunel and killed some workers. He had to rest for six months to get well. Later, he designed many big bridges and railway lines. He also built huge steamships to cross the ocean.

Brunel was born on 9 April 1806. His father was a famous engineer named Marc Isambard Brunel. His mother was named Sophia Kingdom.

His father taught him how to draw and do math. By age eight, Brunel already knew geometry. He even learned to speak French fluently. He studied in schools in France when he was a teenager. He later learned from a master clockmaker in England. This training helped him become a great engineer.

He had many big projects with real numbers. He worked on the Great Western Railway. He used a wide track called the broad gauge. This was different from the standard tracks used now.

He built the Maidenhead Railway Bridge. It is the flattest brick arch bridge in the world. He also built the Great Eastern ship. It launched in 1843. At that time, it was the largest ship ever built. He even designed the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. It spans over 700 feet.

Many of Brunel's ideas are still important today. The Thames Tunnel is now part of the London Overground. This means trains still run through it.

His bridges and railways changed how we travel between cities. People in Britain even voted him one of the greatest Britons in 2002. We can still see his work when we ride trains or cross big bridges. His life shows how one person can change the world with new ideas.
