Gasoline is a yellowish, flammable liquid used to power many machines.

It is most famous for fueling engines that use a spark to burn fuel. These are called spark-ignited internal combustion engines. People use gasoline to move cars, planes, and even small tools.

It is a very important product made in oil refineries. Because it is so useful, it is a high-volume and profitable product. It is a complex mixture of many different parts called hydrocarbons.

Refineries make gasoline through a way of working called distillation.

They take crude oil and heat it to separate it into different parts. One part is called straight-run gasoline, or naphtha. This part is distilled directly from the oil. However, this naphtha often has a low octane rating. To fix this, refineries use other processes like reforming or isomerization. They can also use a catalytic cracker to change the fuel. This helps make the gasoline better for modern engines.

People have been interested in these fuels for a long time. In the late 1800s, engineers developed Otto engines in Germany. These early engines used a fuel made from coal gas. Later, a man named Shukhov created a new process in 1891. This was called the Shukhov cracking process. It was the first way to break down heavy parts of oil. This helped create more of the lighter products used for fuel. This discovery changed how we make energy for transport.

There are many interesting numbers and facts about gasoline.

From one barrel of crude oil, refineries make about 19 to 20 gallons of gasoline. They also make about 11 to 13 gallons of diesel fuel. The octane rating is a special number for gasoline. It measures how well the fuel resists premature ignition. If fuel ignites too early, it causes a loud noise called knocking. In the past, people added tetraethyl lead to raise this number. Now, lead is not used in cars because it is a health hazard.

Gasoline is a substance you can find in many parts of your life. You might see it at a gas station or in a lawnmower. It is very light and will float on top of water.

Because it is light, you cannot use water to put out a gasoline fire. You must use a fine mist instead. If you store gasoline for a long time, it can go stale. This happens if it is not kept in an airtight container. Stale fuel can make an engine very hard to start.
