Naphtha is a liquid mixture that catches fire very easily. It is made of hydrocarbons, which are tiny building blocks found in many fuels. Most naphtha comes from crude oil found deep underground. It can also be made from coal tar, peat, or natural gas.

People use this liquid for many important jobs. It helps make the plastics we use every day. It also works as a fuel for many tools. Without it, some parts of our modern world would work differently.

There are two main ways that naphtha works as a tool. One way is through dilution, which means making something thinner. Heavy crude oil is often too thick to move through pipes. Naphtha is mixed into this thick oil to make it flow better. This allows the oil to travel easily in tankers or pipelines.

Another way is by using it as a fuel. Light naphtha has a low boiling point. This means it turns into a gas very easily when heated. This quality makes it very easy to light in a stove.

People have known about these liquids for a very long time. Ancient texts from around 675 BC mention naphtha in a treaty. In the second century BC, books tell stories about a thick water that caught fire in the sun. In ancient Greece, the word was used for any kind of petroleum or pitch.

During the 19th century, people began using solvent naphtha for cleaning. It was even used as a main part of a famous laundry soap called Fels Naptha. Later, that soap changed because the naphtha was a health risk.

Naphtha comes in different types based on its weight and structure. Scientists often group it into light and heavy naphtha. Light naphtha is used for things like wick-based cigarette lighters. These lighters use a reservoir to pull the liquid up to a wick.

Some people call this fuel "white gas" when using it for camping. In Australia, people often call it Shellite. In many countries like Italy or Bulgaria, the word "nafta" is used to talk about crude oil or diesel fuel. These names help people know exactly which liquid they are using.

Even though naphtha is helpful, it can be dangerous. It is a flammable mixture, so it can start fires quickly. Breathing it in or getting it on your skin can cause irritation.

Because of this, there are strict safety rules in workplaces. In the United States, groups like OSHA set limits on how much naphtha can be in the air. They say workers should not breathe more than 100 parts per million during an eight-hour day. At much higher levels, the liquid becomes immediately dangerous to health. We must always treat it with great care.
