Destructive distillation

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Destructive distillation is a special way to make new things. It uses high heat to break down materials. This process is a type of pyrolysis. Scientists use it to turn organic material into useful products.

This method is very important for modern industry. It helps us find many different chemical compounds. We can even use it to recycle waste polymers today.

How does this thing work? First, we heat a material to a very high temperature. We do this without much air. Sometimes we use a little oxygen or steam. The heat breaks large molecules into smaller ones. This is often called cracking.

Some small molecules then join back together. They form larger things like tar or char. This is called polymerisation. The final weight is less than the starting material. Much of it stays as ash or char.

People have studied this for a long time. A Roman writer named Pliny the Elder wrote about it. He lived from 23 or 24 CE to 79 CE.

He studied what happens to pine wood. He saw it made a light oil and a heavy pitch. These early studies helped chemists understand nature. They used these products to learn about natural materials. This helped them find the structures of things like pyranoses.

We can see great results from using coal. One tonne of coal can make many items. It can produce 700 kg of coke. It also makes 400 m3 of coal gas. You can also get 100 liters of ammonia liquor. There are 50 liters of coal tar too.

Wood is another material we can use. Heating wood makes methanol and acetic acid. It also leaves behind charcoal. These numbers show how much we can get.

This science connects to many things you know. It is a modern version of making charcoal. This craft is very important in places like Scandinavia. It also helps us make new materials. For example, heating natural rubber helped find isoprene. This led to making synthetic rubbers like neoprene.

It turns old waste into something new and useful. Science helps us see the hidden parts of the world.
