Pyrolysis is a special way to break down organic matter using heat.

This process happens in an inert environment, which means there is no oxygen present. Because there is no oxygen, the material cannot catch fire and burn with a flame. Instead, the heat causes thermal decomposition. This is a way of breaking the chemical bonds that hold molecules together.

This process is very important for many different industries. It helps us turn raw materials into useful things like fuel and chemicals.

How does this work step by step? First, the material is heated to a high temperature. As the heat rises, the molecules begin to break apart into smaller pieces.

This process creates three different types of products. It produces solids called char, which are dark and rich in carbon. It also creates liquids, such as heavy oils and thick tar. Finally, it produces non-condensable gases that float away.

If the heat is extremely high, the process is called carbonization. This leaves behind mostly pure carbon as a solid residue.

People have used this method for a very long time.

Ancient Egyptians used a liquid from cedar wood pyrolysis during their embalming process. For a long time, heating wood was the main way to make methanol. Pyrolysis also helped scientists discover important things like oxygen and phosphorus. Many chemical substances were found by heating different materials in this way. It has been a key tool for discovery for centuries.

There are many specific ways to use pyrolysis today.

In the chemical industry, it is used to make ethylene from petroleum or coal. It can also turn natural gas into hydrogen gas and solid carbon. Some types of pyrolysis happen at different temperatures. Slow pyrolysis happens between 250 and 450 degrees Celsius. Flash pyrolysis uses much higher heat, between 800 and 1000 degrees Celsius. Different temperatures change how much oil, char, or gas is made.

You can actually see pyrolysis happening in your own kitchen.

When you cook sugar, it undergoes a process called caramelization. This is a type of pyrolysis that makes food turn brown and sweet. You might taste this in caramelized onions used in French onion soup. Even frying food involves high heat that can lead to pyrolysis. If food gets too hot and turns black, it has charred. This shows how heat changes the very structure of what we eat.
