It is created by heating wood or other plant materials in a process called pyrolysis. This means the material is heated with very little oxygen present. The heat removes all the water and other parts from the wood. What is left behind is a concentrated form of carbon. This material is very useful for many different jobs.

To make charcoal the traditional way, people use a process called charcoal burning. Workers stack wood pieces into a large cone shape. They leave small openings at the bottom to let a little air in. Then, they cover the whole pile with turf or moist clay. This covering helps control the air inside the pile. A fire is lit at the bottom of a central shaft. The fire slowly spreads through the wood to turn it into charcoal.

People have been making charcoal since ancient times. In the past, professional workers called colliers managed the delicate fires. These workers often lived alone in small huts to watch their wood piles. In the Harz Mountains of Germany, they lived in conical huts called Köten.

Making charcoal was a huge business in places like Central Europe. However, making so much charcoal caused a lot of deforestation. This meant many trees were lost because people needed more wood. To help trees grow back, some used a method called coppicing.

In 1897, Ellsworth B. A. Zwoyer patented an American form of the charcoal briquette. Later, Henry Ford helped make them popular by using wood and sawdust from making cars. There is also a special type called activated charcoal. It is heated to about 900 degrees Celsius with special gases. This creates tiny holes, or pores, that help it trap chemicals for medical use.

Charcoal has many important uses in our world. It is a very powerful fuel for blacksmiths. It can burn at temperatures over 1,000 degrees Celsius. This is hot enough to melt iron, which melts at about 1,538 degrees Celsius.
