First, we heat a material to a very high temperature. We do this without much air. This heat breaks big molecules into smaller bits. This is also called pyrolysis.

This process makes many different products. When we use coal, we can make coke. We also make coal gas and coal tar. We can even make ammonia liquor. One tonne of coal can make 700 kg of coke. It can also make 400 m3 of coal gas.

Long ago, a man named Pliny the Elder studied this. He saw what happens to pine wood. The wood makes a light oil and a heavy pitch.

Today, we use this to recycle waste. We can also use it to study nature. Heating natural rubber helped us find isoprene. This led to making new rubbers like neoprene. It is a very useful way to find new things.
