Large molecules are like long chains. Cracking breaks the bonds between carbon atoms. This turns long chains into short ones. We use this to make useful things like petrol. It also makes fuel for planes and diesel.

There are different ways to crack oil. Thermal cracking uses very high heat. Steam cracking is a type of thermal cracking. It uses steam to break oil into parts. This helps make things like ethylene.

Another way is catalytic cracking. This uses a catalyst. A catalyst is a tool that helps a change happen. It can work at lower temperatures. This saves power.

In a fluid catalytic cracker, a powder is used. This powder helps break heavy oil into gasoline. The catalyst can get dirty with coke. Coke is a solid form of carbon. Workers use air to burn the coke off. This makes the catalyst ready to work again. Hydrocracking is another way. It uses hydrogen gas to help break the bonds.
