Syngas

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Syngas is a special mix of gases. It mostly contains hydrogen and carbon monoxide. It can also have carbon dioxide and methane.

People make syngas in many ways. One way is by using natural gas. Another way is by using coal. This is called coal gasification. People can also use liquid hydrocarbons. These are substances like oil.

Syngas is very useful. It can be used as a fuel. In the past, people used wood gas for cars. This happened in Europe during World War II. This was when gasoline was hard to find.

We use syngas to make important things. It helps make ammonia. Ammonia is used as a fertilizer for plants. Syngas also helps make methanol. Methanol is used to make many other chemicals. We can even use it to make liquid fuels and lubricants. This happens through the Fischer-Tropsch process. This is a way to turn gas into liquid.
