People can make this gas from methanol. This is a two-step way. First, they get methanol from synthesis gas. Then, they use a process called dehydration. This means they remove water to make the gas. Some people also make it from biomass. Biomass is material from plants. It can also come from waste from animals or food.

This gas can work as a fuel. It is a good fuel for diesel engines. It burns very cleanly. This means it lets out very little soot. It also meets strict rules for clean air. In a race, a car using this fuel went a very long way. It drove 589 km on just one liter.

Dimethyl ether has other uses too. It can be a propellant. A propellant is something that pushes a spray out of a can. You might find it in hair spray or bug spray. It can also be a refrigerant. A refrigerant is a substance used to keep things cold. In 1876, a ship used it to carry meat. This helped keep the food fresh during the trip.
