Dimethyl ether is a colorless gas that plays many important roles. It is a simple organic compound with the formula CH3OCH3. Scientists often use it as a building block to create other substances. It can also work as a propellant to push liquids out of spray cans.

This gas is very useful in many different industries around the world.

There are a few ways to make this gas. One common way is through a process called dehydration. In this method, makers take methanol and remove water to create the gas. They can also use a one-step process that is still being developed. Another way is to make BioDME from biomass, which is material from plants. It can even be made from waste from animals or food.

People have known about this gas for a long time. Jean-Baptiste Dumas and Eugene Péligot first made it in 1835. They did this by distilling methanol and sulfuric acid. In the late 1800s, it helped change how we move food. In 1876, a French engineer named Charles Tellier used it on a ship. He named the ship Le Frigorifique to carry meat from Argentina.

This gas has many specific uses in our daily lives. It is used in freeze sprays to treat warts. It is also a part of some high-temperature blowtorch gases. You might find it in hair spray or bug spray cans. In 1985, Western Europe produced about 50,000 tons of it. It is also a very clean fuel for diesel engines. It has a high cetane number of 55, which is higher than many petroleum fuels.

Using dimethyl ether can help protect our environment. It burns very cleanly and produces very little soot. This helps it meet strict air rules in Europe, the U.S., and Japan. In a special race, a vehicle using only this fuel was incredibly efficient. It drove 589 km on just one liter of fuel. This was much better than the old record of 306 km per liter.
