Distillation

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Distillation is a very useful way to separate different substances in a liquid mixture.

It works by using heat to turn parts of a liquid into gas. This process relies on how different substances boil at different temperatures. By carefully heating a mix, we can pick out just the parts we want. This method helps us create very pure liquids for many different jobs. However, distillation uses a huge amount of energy. It actually uses about 25% of all the energy used in industry today.

The way it works involves a few clear steps. First, a liquid mixture is placed in a container and heated. As the temperature rises, the parts of the liquid that boil easily turn into vapor. This vapor then moves into a cool area called a condenser. When the hot gas hits the cool surface, it turns back into a liquid. This change from gas to liquid is called condensation.

Finally, the new, pure liquid drips into a separate collection flask. This liquid is often called the distillate.

People have been using distillation for thousands of years.

Ancient Akkadian tablets show that Babylonians used it for making perfumes. In ancient India, people used clay tubes that looked like bamboo to distill liquids. By the 1st century CE, chemists in Alexandria, Egypt, were also using these methods. During the Islamic Golden Age, Muslim chemists like al-Razi experimented with many different substances. They even found ways to make alcohol by distilling wine. In China, evidence shows that people were distilling beverages as early as the Song dynasty.

Many important things around us are made using distillation.

We use it in desalination to turn salty sea water into fresh water that people can drink. In oil refineries, a process called fractional distillation separates crude oil into fuels. This provides the gasoline we use for cars and materials for animal feed. We also use it to separate gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and argon from the air. In labs, scientists use it to clean up chemicals or separate impurities. It is even used to make strong drinks like whiskey, rum, and vodka.

In the past, people used simple glass tools called retorts.

These had long necks that helped the gas cool down and drip into a jar. Later, inventors made better machines that could work continuously. In 1822, Anthony Perrier made one of the first continuous stills. Aeneas Coffey improved this design in 1830, creating a type of still used for many modern fuels. Today, we have moved from small glass tubes to huge industrial towers. Even so, some people still use old-fashioned pot stills to make fine spirits like cognac.
