Continuous distillation is a special way to separate liquids.

It is a process that never stops. A liquid mixture flows into a system without any breaks. This is different from batch distillation. In batch distillation, you add a mixture at the start and take parts out one after another. In continuous distillation, everything happens at the same time. The liquid goes in, and the separated parts come out constantly. This makes it a very steady way to work.

How does this work? It all depends on boiling. When you heat a liquid mixture, some parts turn into vapor more easily than others. This vapor rises up through a tall tower. As it rises, it cools down. Some of the vapor turns back into a liquid and falls again. This creates a cycle that helps separate the parts. The parts that boil easiest are called the distillate. They exit from the top of the tower. The parts that do not boil easily are called the bottoms. These exit from the bottom.

To make the separation even better, engineers use special tools inside the tower.

Many towers have horizontal plates or trays inside them. Some towers use packing material instead. These trays help the rising vapor and the falling liquid meet. This meeting helps the separation work much better. Engineers also use something called reflux. Reflux is when some of the liquid from the top is sent back down into the tower. This cooling helps the tower separate the parts more cleanly.

This process is used in many huge industries.

Petroleum refineries use it most often. They use it to separate crude oil into different groups of compounds. These groups are called fractions. Other industries use it too. It is used for natural gas, coal tar, and even making liquor. It is also used for food engineering and separating cannabinoids. Because the process stays in a steady state, the quality of the product stays the same. This is a big advantage for making large amounts of things.

Industrial distillation towers are truly massive.

They are usually tall, vertical cylinders made of steel. Some towers are only 65 centimeters wide. Others can be as wide as 11 meters. They can be 6 meters tall, or even more than 60 meters!

In a lab, scientists might use small glass versions. But for big jobs, these giant steel towers do the work. They use computers to monitor the heat and the flow to keep everything perfect.
