Workers use a way called distillation. This separates the oil into different parts. Some parts are used for jet fuel. Others are used for diesel. About 19 to 20 gallons of gasoline come from one barrel of oil.

Engineers add special parts to the mix. These are called additives. Additives help keep engines clean. They also stop rust. Some blends include ethanol. Ethanol is a type of alcohol.

Engineers also watch the octane rating. This is a number that shows how well the fuel works. A good rating stops knocking. Knocking is when the fuel explodes too early. This can hurt an engine. In the past, people used lead to raise this number. Now, they do not use lead because it can hurt health.

Gasoline is very light. It will float on top of water.
