Flight attendant

society Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A flight attendant is a member of the aircrew. Their main job is to keep passengers safe in the cabin. They also work to make sure passengers are comfortable. This role is much more focused on safety than jobs on trains or ships. People often call them cabin crew to group them together. This group is different from the pilots in the cockpit.

Before a plane takes off, flight attendants do many important tasks. They check safety gear like life vests and flashlights. They also look for emergency equipment and firefighting tools. They check the cabin for any unusual smells or sounds. They help passengers with their carry-on bags and check their size. They also make sure people in exit rows are ready to help.

History shows that this job has changed a lot over time. Heinrich Kubis was the first flight attendant in 1912. He worked on a Zeppelin airship. Later, in 1930, Ellen Church became the first female flight attendant. She was a registered nurse at United Airlines. Many airlines hired nurses because they wanted people who knew how to help.

In the past, there were many unfair rules for flight attendants. In the United States, many airlines only hired women. Some airlines even fired women if they got married. In 1957, Ruth Carol Taylor became the first African-American flight attendant in the U.S. Later, Patricia Banks Edmiston joined Capitol Airlines in 1960. Laws changed in the 1960s and 1970s to make the job fairer for everyone.

During a flight, flight attendants use trolleys to serve food and drinks. They must also watch the cabin closely for any problems. They are trained to handle many emergencies like fires or medical issues. They can even help with births on a plane. When the plane lands, they stay near the exits. They help passengers, especially children, get off the aircraft safely.
