People have many names for this mountain. In Spanish, the word "cerro" means a ridge or a hill. The Tehuelche people called it Chaltén. This name means "smoking mountain" in their language. They used this name because clouds often form around the peak. It looks like the mountain is smoking. This mountain is one of several peaks the Tehuelche called Chaltén.

History tells us how people first found this place. Spanish explorer Antonio de Viedma saw the mountain in 1783. He reached the shores of Viedma Lake with his companions. Later, an Argentine explorer named Francisco Moreno saw it in 1877. He named it Fitz Roy to honor Robert FitzRoy. Captain FitzRoy had traveled up the Santa Cruz River in 1834. He helped map much of the Patagonian coast.

Climbing this mountain is a very hard job. Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone first climbed it in 1952. Many other climbers have tried different paths over the years. In 1984, a group from Poland climbed the west face. This is called the "Slovak Way." In 2014, Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold did something amazing. They finished the Fitz Roy Traverse. This path goes across a ridge for 5 kilometers. It involves a lot of climbing to reach the top.

Many visitors come to see the mountain today. Hikers often walk from El Chaltén to see the view. They might walk between Laguna de Los Tres and Laguna Sucia. The whole trip is about 20 kilometers long. Some people walk the whole path in one day. Others stay at the Poincenot campground to take more time.
