It sits directly on the international border between Argentina and Chile. The peak is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. It is situated near Viedma Lake and the small village of El Chaltén. This mountain is a major symbol for the Argentine Santa Cruz Province. Its shape appears on both the provincial flag and the coat of arms.

In 2014, Chile established the Chaltén Mountain Range Natural Site. This area protects the Chilean side of the mountain and the surrounding range.

The mountain has several different names used by different people. The Spanish word "cerro" means a ridge or a hill. The Tehuelche people, also known as the Aonikenk, called the peak Chaltén. This name translates to "smoking mountain" in their language. This name comes from the way clouds usually form around the peak. It makes the mountain look as if it is smoking. Chaltén is actually one of several peaks that the Tehuelche people named.

European explorers recorded seeing the mountain at different times in history. The Spanish explorer Antonio de Viedma first saw it in 1783. He and his companions reached the shores of Viedma Lake. Later, the Argentine explorer Francisco Moreno saw the mountain on March 2, 1877. He named it Fitz Roy to honor Captain Robert FitzRoy. Captain FitzRoy had traveled up the Santa Cruz River in 1834. He was responsible for charting large parts of the Patagonian coast.

Defining the border between Argentina and Chile has been a complex process. An 1881 treaty began the work of setting the boundary. In 1898, surveyors Francisco Pascasio Moreno and Diego Barros Arana defined the line. They used several mountain landmarks to show natural continuity. These landmarks included Mount Fitz Roy, Torre, Huemul, and Campana. Other landmarks were Agassiz, Heim, Mayo, and Stokes. Argentina and Chile agreed to detour the border eastwards. This detour allows the line to pass directly over the main summit. However, the border south of the summit remains undefined near Cerro Murallón. A 1998 agreement helped define more of the line between Fitz Roy and Cerro Daudet.

Climbing Monte Fitz Roy is a very difficult and famous challenge. Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone completed the first ascent in 1952. They climbed via the Southeast Ridge, also called the Franco-Argentine Ridge. In 1965, Carlos Comesaña and José Luis Fonrouge made the second ascent. They used a route called the Supercanaleta, which is 1,600 meters long. Other notable climbs include the Southwest Ridge, known as the Californian Route. In 1984, a Polish team climbed the west face via the "Slovak Way." This specific route is still unrepeated today.

Some climbers have achieved incredible feats on this mountain. In 2014, Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold completed the Fitz Roy Traverse. This route follows the ridge line across Fitz Roy and its satellite peaks. The traverse is 5 kilometers long. It involves a cumulative elevation gain of approximately 4,000 meters. Both climbers received the Piolet d'Or award for this achievement. In 2021, Sean Villanueva O'Driscoll completed the Moonwalk Traverse. This was the second ascent of the traverse, but he climbed it in reverse. He also won a Piolet d'Or award in 2022.

Today, the mountain is a very popular destination for tourism. Many hikers visit the area to see the spectacular views. A common trek goes between Laguna de Los Tres and Laguna Sucia. This hike starts from the town of El Chaltén. The total distance for the round trip is about 20 kilometers. Some hikers finish the entire trek in a single day. Others choose to stay at the Poincenot campground. This campground is managed by a local association for those who want more time to explore.
