It sits on the border of Argentina and Chile. The mountain is part of a large ice field. It is also near Viedma Lake and the town of El Chaltén.

Some people call the mountain Chaltén. This name comes from a Tehuelche word. It means "smoking mountain." This is because clouds often form around the peak. The mountain is a symbol for the Santa Cruz Province in Argentina. You can even see it on their flag.

Many people visit this place to hike. You can walk a long path to see the mountain. Some hikers stay at a camp called Poincenot.

Climbers also love this mountain. Two men named Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone first climbed it in 1952. Other climbers have done many hard things here. In 2014, two climbers finished a very long route. They climbed across a ridge for 5 kilometers. This was called the Fitz Roy Traverse.
