The Tlingit people call the mountain Tsalxaan. They have a story about the mountain. They say it once sat next to another peak. Then they had an argument and moved apart. The mountains in between are called the children of Tsalxaan.

The weather there is often harsh. It gets a lot of snow each year. Low pressure from the ocean brings bad weather. This often makes thick clouds. The clouds can hide the top of the mountain.

People first climbed to the top in 1931. Allen Carpe and Terris Moore reached the summit. They used a ridge on the southeast side. They had to wait for good weather to finish. They also used skis and snowshoes to move through the deep snow. Many other groups have climbed the mountain since then.
