The cave was formed by a Paleocene lava flow. Long ago, hot lava flowed over the land. As the lava cooled on the top and bottom, it began to shrink. This shrinking caused the rock to fracture, or crack. The cracks started in a blocky pattern. Then, they changed into a regular hexagonal pattern. These are six-sided shapes like a honeycomb. The cracks grew toward the center of the flow. This created the long basalt columns we see today.

Many people have helped make the cave famous. In 1772, a naturalist named Sir Joseph Banks told the world about it. The cave got its name from a poet named James Macpherson. He wrote an epic poem about a hero named Fingal. This hero was part of his Ossian cycle of poems. In Irish mythology, this hero is known as Fionn mac Cumhaill. The name Fingal might mean "white stranger."

You can experience the cave in several ways. Some people take sightseeing cruises from April to September. These boats pass through the large arched entrance. If the water is calm, you can land on Staffa. You can walk on a path of fractured columns. This walkway is just above the high-water level. From inside, the entrance frames the island of Iona. It is a place that many artists and writers love.
